INTRODUCTION

In an increasingly competitive economic environment for healthcare services, clinical diagnostic laboratories are looking at tools that can improve their efficiency and increase their profits. Of primary interest are sophisticated laboratory information systems (LIS) that can interact with the facility or institution’s electronic medical record (EMR) system and/or electronic health record (EHR).

Although the LIS concept is not new, advances in technology have made them more sophisticated than ever, offering clinical and non-clinical applications, Web-based connectivity, customizable configurations and rule-writing, scalability, and modular units that can offer data handling for the most cutting-edge laboratory techniques and testing.

Every clinical laboratory is unique, as are the needs of each laboratory’s LIS. A number of different technological approaches have been developed to meet the varied needs of the heterogeneous nature of the clinical laboratory industry, including fully integrated LIS’s, middleware solutions, and Software as a Service (SAAS) solutions.

This report will provide an overview of the clinical laboratory industry, the impact that it has on LIS’s, and an understanding of a variety of technological approaches to deciding which LIS is appropriate for your facility. In addition, case studies will be presented, suggestions made on how to decide which type of technological approach is right for your laboratory, and ideas on how to implement the LIS you choose.


STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

The principal problems associated with laboratory unit of federal medical centre, bida by this research study are as follows:

·        Inconsistence of patients test result record

·        Poor manual database recording

·        Poor management information system among levels of personnel.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

              The primary aim of this project work is to design and implement an automated laboratory patients test results for the medical personnel .The following are objectives of this work:

             To design a more accurate, reliable, and comprehensive computer program for laboratories record keeping.

             To relieve the burden and obstacles hindering the production of effective laboratory duties.

             To improve work force productivity.

             To meet effectively provide new and better way of delivering healthcare that meet the needs of patients.
