STAFF MONTORING SYSTM WITH BIOMETRIC

Undergraduate

ABSTRACT

Institutions, companies and organizations where security and net productivity is vital, access to certain areas must be controlled and monitored through an automated system of attendance. Managing people is a difficult task for most of the organizations and maintaining the attendance record is an important factor in people management. When considering the academic institute, taking the attendance of non-academic staff on daily basis and maintaining the records is a major task. Manually taking attendance and maintaining it for a long time adds to the difficulty of this task as well as wastes a lot of time. For this reason, an efficient system is developed in this work to solve the problem of manual attendance. This system takes attendance electronically with the help of a fingerprint recognition system, and all the records are saved for subsequent operations. Staff biometric attendance system employs an automated system to calculate attendance of staff in IBB University and do further calculations of monthly attendance summary in order to reduce human errors during calculations. In essence, the developed system can be employed in curbing the problems of lateness, buddy punching and truancy in any institution, organization or establishment. The developed system will also improve the productivity of any organization if properly implemented.

BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Employee management is very vital in the administration and management of organizations. Increase in security breaches and transaction fraud in an organization are so negatively alarming that many organisation's resort to utilizing personal verification and employee identification technologies. In this work, the technology has looked into an efficient Staff monitoring system using fingerprints, names, phone numbers, designations, sex, ID numbers compiled and stored in a Database. In calculating the attendance, the daily scanned fingerprints are matched with the fingerprint stored in the database using the scanner. Attendance is accepted if the scanned finger prints matched with the stored finger prints in the database and if otherwise, the attendance is rejected. Fingerprint has been defined by Francis (2009) as the traces of impression from the friction ridges on the end of our fingers. Humans have various classification of finger prints. According to Manisha and Balkisha (2013) there are three classes of finger prints which are; loop, arc and whorl. Humans have been hitherto using fingerprints for personal identification, this have been very crucial in crime detection using forensic approaches for more than 400 years. It has been an established fact that no two individuals have the-same finger prints even identical twins and the prints of any individual remains unchanged throughout life. Therefore, the fingerprints validity serves as a basis for personal identification because this will overcome the limitations of the existing system where one person can sign for another. Using this system, No one can thump print for another.

Finger prints are very unique feature in nature and that is why they are consequently utilized in personnel identification and verification (Francis, 2009).

For an organization to function effectively, it has to ensure proper record of attendance of personnel or employees be it an educational or financial institution. Using Ibrahim Badamasi Babamgida University Lapai (IBBUL) as a case study, managing attendance records of staff (non-academic) of an institute is a herculean task. It is time consuming and it is difficult to ascertain the cumulative numbers of staff.  To design a better attendance management system for staff so that records will be maintained with ease and accuracy was an important key behind initiating this project. This would improve accuracy of attendance records because it will save valuable time of the staff as well as registry unit in time of compilation and monthly report generation. There is a need for a system that would eliminate all of these limitations of the existing system.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Improper management of staffs has result to low productivity in the institution. Since the inception of IBB University Lapai staff monitoring system has being manually taken. This mode of attendance has hinders the university personnel’s by consumption of time and difficulty in generating report of staff record (non-academic). For this reason, it is vital to carry out an in-depth research in order to develop a program which accommodates only the use of fingerprint device for attendance taking.

 AIMS

The aim of proposing staff monitoring system is to design and develop a staff monitoring system using fingerprint as a biometric.
