DESIGN AND IMPLIMENTATION OF A STUDENT RECOGNITION SYSTEM

ABSTRACT

Students attendance in the classroom is very important task and if taken manually wastes a lot of time. There are many automatic methods available for this purpose i.e. biometric attendance. All These methods also waste time because students have to make a queue to touch their thumb on the scanning device. This work describes the efficient algorithm that automatically marks the attendance without human intervention. This attendance is recorded by using a camera attached in front of classroom that is continuously capturing images of students, detect the faces in images and compare the detected faces with the database and mark the attendance. We propose using real time face detection algorithms integrated on an existing Learning Management System (LMS), which automatically detects and registers students attending the lecture. The system represents a supplemental tool for instructors, to track facial changes during a longer period of time. This new system aims to be less time consuming than traditional methods, at the same time being non intrusive and not interfere with the regular teaching process. The tool promises to offer accurate results and a more detailed reporting system which shows student attendance in a classroom.


 INTRODUCTION

As the technology improves, most of educational Institutions can afford to have a good security and attendance system. To implement this, we have come forward to design and develop technology oriented solution, and utilize the advantages of the security system. For example Face recognition, Swipe card, Image processing, Finger prints etc.

Face recognition is as old as computer vision, both because of the practical importance of the topic and theoretical interest from cognitive scientists. Despite the fact that other methods of identification (such as fingerprints, or iris scans) can be more accurate, face recognition has always remains a major focus of research because of its noninvasive nature and because it is people's primary method of person identification. Face recognition technology is gradually evolving to a universal biometric solution since it requires virtually zero effort from the user end while compared with other biometric options. Biometric face recognition is basically used in three main domains: time attendance systems and employee management; visitor management systems; and last but not the least authorization systems and access control systems. Traditionally, student’s attendances are taken manually by using attendance sheet given by the faculty members in class, which is a time consuming event. Moreover, it is very difficult to verify one by one student in a large classroom environment with distributed branches whether the authenticated students are actually responding or not. The present authors demonstrate in this paper how face recognition can be used for an effective attendance system to automatically record the presence of an enrolled individual within the respective venue. Proposed system also maintains a log file to keep records of the entry of every individual with respect to a universal system time. (Nirmalya, 2012)

Maintaining the attendance is very important in all the institutes for checking the performance of students. Every institute has its own method in this regard. Some are taking attendance manually using attendance registers, marking attendance sheets or file based approach and some have adopted methods of automatic attendance using some biometric techniques. But in these methods students have to wait for long time in making a queue at time they enter the classroom. Many biometric systems are available but the key authentications are same is all the techniques. Every biometric system consists of enrolment process in which unique features of a person is stored in the database and then there are processes of identification and verification. These two processes compare the biometric feature of a person with previously stored template captured at the time of enrollment. Biometric templates can be of many types like Fingerprints, Eye Iris, Face, Hand Geometry, Signature, Gait and voice. Our system uses the face recognition approach for the automatic attendance of students in the classroom environment without students intervention. Face recognition consists of two steps, in first step faces are detected in the image and then these detected faces are compared with the database for verification. The efficiency of face recognition algorithm can be increased with the fast face detection algorithm. Face recognition techniques can be divided into two types, Appearance based which use texture features that is applied to whole face or some specific regions, other is Feature based which uses geometric features like mouth, nose, eyes, eye brows, cheeks and relation between them. Illumination invariant algorithm is utilized for removing the lighting effect inside the classroom


  STATEMENTS OF THE PROBLEM

This proposed system introduces a new automatic attendance marking system, which integrates video surveillance and face recognition algorithms into the process of attendance management. The system is implemented using a non intrusive web camera installed at the entrance of room, if there is any movement it capture the image. The captured image undergoes face detection and faces recognition, detects and extracts all faces from the acquired images. After faces have been extracted, they are compared with an existing database of student images and upon successful recognition a student attendance list is generated and saved on a database.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES

This research work is aim to design and implement an automatic system capable of taking student attendance during lectures through a facial recognition system so as to reduce time wasted by lecturers during manual attendance taking and ensure authentication of the attendance list. Therefore, the main objectives of this project work are;

Ø  To provide accurate and fast identification.

Ø  To provide a less stressful and a more reliable means of taking student attendance.

Ø  To Eliminate problem of time wasting of lectures hours.

Ø  To ensure high usability and security.
